You’re still a few weeks away from feeling the joy of holding your baby in your arms, but you won’t need to wait to see your child’s cute little face before choosing the pediatrician that will follow-up with him/her throughout their entire childhood.
But how to choose one?
Ask for recommendations from friends, family, call your insurance provider, listen to recommendations from your doctor, birth class instructor, and anyone you trust.
Book a quick appointment and take a list of questions with you. Take the time to check if the pediatrician’s methods align with yours and everything you want for your child.
Just like when you picked an OB-GYN, it’s important to feel empathy and confidence in your doctor. Remember: you’re going to be seeing this medical professional a lot for the first couple of months of the baby’s life, as you’ll have monthly check-up appointments. You can also look up your doctor online and learn about their medical background, how long their waiting time is and talk to other moms about what they think of them.
Of course, your own opinion of them will only be fully formed after several monthly consults. However, it’s worth looking into how available they’ll be to answer your questions and if they can be on-call for emergencies. Do they answer the phone during weekends and during overnight hours? Are they open to answering text messages?
You don’t have to stick with the same pediatrician forever: obviously, you can look for a different doctor who will better correspond to your expectations.
However, at least for the first few weeks of the baby’s life, it’s interesting to have someone who will be able to cater to your needs.
